Understanding The Coronavirus
A Respiratory Illness: (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/COVID-19)
COVID-19 is a mild to severe respiratory illness that is caused by a coronavirus (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 of the genus Betacoronavirus). It is transmitted chiefly by contact with infectious material (such as respiratory droplets) or with objects or surfaces contaminated by the causative virus. It is characterized especially by fever, cough, and shortness of breath and may progress to pneumonia and respiratory failure.
How Does It Spread?: (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/prevention-risks.html#h)
COVID-19 most commonly spreads from an infected person to another person through the following.
• Close contact: Breathing in someone’s respiratory droplets after they cough, sneeze, laugh or sing.
• Contaminated surfaces: Touching something with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands.
• Common greetings: Handshakes, hugs or kisses.
Protecting Ourselves (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/prevention-risks.html#h)
What Can We Do For Protection?:
Individuals should continue to think ahead about the actions that they can take to stay healthy and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Canada. Measures to reduce COVID-19 in your community are especially important as some areas begin to lift restrictions.
In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within communities and across the country, all Canadians are advised to:
• avoid closed spaces, crowded places, and close contact
• stay home and away from others if you feel sick
• stick to a small and consistent social circle and avoid gathering in large groups
• talk to your employer about working at home if possible
• limit contact with people at higher risk, such as older adults and those with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems
• go outside to exercise
• keep a distance of at least 2 arms lengths (approximately 2 metres) from others
o household contacts (people you live with) don’t need to distance from each other unless they’re sick or have travelled in the last 14 days
Proper Hand Hygiene and Etiquette:
Maintaining good hand and respiratory hygiene are very important personal practices that help reduce the risk of infection or spreading infection to others.
• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
o If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
• When coughing or sneezing:
o cough or sneeze into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand
o dispose of any tissues you’ve used as soon as possible in a lined waste basket and wash your hands immediately afterwards
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Physical Distancing:
Individuals can slow the spread of COVID-19 by making a conscious effort to keep a physical distance between each other. Physical distancing is proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of illness during an outbreak.
This means making changes in your everyday routines to minimize close contact with others, including:
• avoiding crowded places and non-essential travel
• avoiding common greetings, such as handshakes
• limiting contact with people at higher risk, such as older adults and those with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems
• keeping a distance of at least 2 arms-length (approximately 2 metres) from others
Wearing Non-medical Masks or face coverings:
Wearing a non-medical mask or face covering while out in public is recommended for periods of time when it’s not possible to consistently maintain a 2-metre physical distance from others, particularly in crowded public settings, such as:
• shopping areas
• public transportation
• stores and personal service settings
In some situations, provincial or territorial public health authorities have made it mandatory to wear a non-medical mask (or face covering) in public areas. Public health officials make such recommendations based on a number of factors, including how much COVID-19 is circulating in your community. In some jurisdictions, the use of masks in many indoor public spaces and on public transit is now mandatory. You can check with your local public health authority on the requirements for your location.
Masks alone won’t prevent the spread of COVID-19. You must consistently and strictly adhere to good hygiene and public health measures, including core personal practices like frequent hand washing and physical distancing.
Cleaning and Disinfecting:
The COVID-19 virus is most likely to be on surfaces you frequently touch with your hands. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces to lower the chance of COVID-19 spreading in your home, workplace and public spaces.
Health Canada has published a list of hard surface disinfectants that are likely to be effective for use against COVID-19.
Special precautions must be used when cleaning with bleach to avoid serious incidents.
COVID-19 School Re-Opening Plan
General Information
School Changes/ Highlights/ Updates:
1) Northmount will have a full-time custodian from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as part of our staff team. The addition of a custodian during this time period is necessary for an ongoing cleaning of the school while the boys are present. Aside from regular vacuuming and cleaning of the classrooms and floors, our custodian will be wiping door handles, cleaning the washrooms and ensuring that our high volume areas are sanitized throughout the day.
2) Northmount will be installing three touchless door openers at the main entrance and the two student entrances, respectively.
3) Outside of each door in the school, excepting some offices, a manual push hand-sanitizer dispenser will be installed. It will be a policy in the school that any individual entering a room, without exception, must sanitize his/her hands.
4) Each teacher and staff member will be wearing either a face shield and mask or a mask and eye protection when interacting with others.
5) All students from JK to Grade 8 will be expected to wear face masks (cloth or disposable). Students will not be required to wear masks or face shields for Phys. Ed. or during recess.
6) Students in each grade will be identified as a single “cohort” or group. As such, each cohort will have its own classroom space and recess area.
7) Each student will have a locker, however, the use of the lockers will be for keeping coats and Physical Ed. clothes and shoes, only. Books and notebooks will be kept in their desks, in their bins under their desks or in their knapsacks kept on the back of their chairs. Each student will need to keep their own things in their locker or at their own desk area.
8) The direction of traffic flow in the hallways will be clearly laid out. Each side of the hallways will be separated by lockers or benches to maintain the directional flow.
9) A shield will be installed around the front Reception desk and within the Front and Advancement/ Finance Offices.
10) Should a full school shutdown be mandated by authorities at any point, Northmount will return to its Webex platform as per last year to continue its academic programming.
COVID-19 School Re-Opening Plan
2020/21 School Year Specifics
School Schedule:
1) September 8th will be an Orientation day for all students and a special schedule will be in place to help students navigate the new expectations at Northmount. During this orientation, students will learn about the new protocols and procedures and the importance of following them. We recognize that this may create some inconvenience, but we believe it is prudent to ensure a smooth running of the school days following. Please note the following time for your son to be at school on this first day:
a. Grades 7 and 8: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
b. Grades 5 and 6: 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.
c. Grades 2, 3 and 4: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
d. JK, SK and Grade 1: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
2) Students at Northmount will be in school for regular academic periods following our schedule as per past years. School begins at 8:25 a.m. and finishes at the staggered dismissal times mentioned above.
3) Within the academic schedule next year, students will not be transitioning from class to class. With the exception of Physical and Health Education, specialty teachers will move from class to class.
4) Whenever possible, Phys. Ed. will be held outside during the first few months of the school year.
5) Teachers may opt to hold classes outside, weather permitting, to provide opportunities for students to take their masks off.
6) Healthy Kidz lunches can once again be ordered online. Following health protocols, hot and cold lunches will be delivered in containers and will be given to students at the appropriate time.
Arrival and Dismissal:
1) For parking, all faculty, staff members, parents and volunteers will use the L.A. Fitness lot.
2) Student drop off in the morning will continue in its present form. The staggered arrival of families presently allows for an orderly entering of our boys into the school. There will be three clearly labeled grade-specific drop off zones. Further to this, there will be 5 student entrances to the school being used – the doors on the south end of the school by the kitchen (Grades 4 & 5) and Music Room (JK, SK & Grade 7), the student entrance by the Chapel (Grades 1 & 6), the classroom door to the field (Grade 2) and the student entrance adjacent to the library (Grades 3 & 8). Each area will have its own shoe/ boot rack.
3) Parents will have very limited access to the school due to COVID protocol and trying to keep visitors to a minimum.
4) Dismissal at day’s end will now be staggered and we ask parents to be prompt for pick-up. The same doors used for entering the building will be used for exiting, with parents driving up and their son(s) being called to come out from their classrooms by walkie-talkie or phone. Students will only be dismissed when parents arrive and the following schedule will be used:
a. 3:25 p.m. JK-Grade 2
b. 3:35 p.m. Grades 3-5
c. 3:45 p.m. Grades 6-8
5) The After School Program will be available and proper protocols will be put in place. Please note that there may be a limit of 15 placements available.
Field Trips/ Outdoor Education:
1) At this time, it is expected that field trips will be cancelled or very limited as per the general directions given by Toronto Public Health. Over the coming the months, restrictions may loosen and Northmount will look for opportunities to provide these experiences for our students.
COVID-19 School Re-Opening Plan
Faculty/Staff Policies and Procedures
Policies:
1) Any faculty and staff who are experiencing new or worsening symptoms (Appendix 1) consistent with COVID-19 must not attend school and should seek appropriate medical attention as required, including getting tested at a COVID-19 Testing Centre (Addendum 2).
2) Every faculty and staff member will receive a Health Screening Checklist, via the EduSafe App, which must be performed daily before coming to school and without exception. Failure to complete the daily screening will mean that the faculty or staff member will not be allowed entry into the school building until such time that it is completed.
3) As part of this screening, there will be a need to take one’s temperature before coming to school. This must be performed without any temperature reducing medication in your system (Tylenol, Advil, etc.) for at least 6 hours. Should your temperature be higher than 37.8 C (100 F), you must stay at home and NOT come to school.
4) Should an individual who is symptomatic “fail” the screening, there will be two options:
a. The individual will need to be tested for COVID-19 twice, with a minimum twenty-four hour window between tests. Should both tests come back negative, the faculty or staff member can return to school when symptoms have ceased. Negative tests must be shown to the school to ensure the health and safety of the community.
b. Should an individual opt to forego testing, he/ she must self-isolate for 14 days. Providing the individual does not develop further symptoms during this time, he/she can return to school after the 14 days.
c. A teacher who opts for the latter decision (b), will be required to teach their classes, via Webex, unless symptoms make one incapable of doing so.
5) A screening can also be “failed” due to a family member’s travel. Family members who are travelling for work or family related activities are asked to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arriving back in Canada. Should a family member opt not do so, the Northmount faculty or staff member must quarantine in the house with the family member for 14 days.
** Isolate: the practice of separating sick people with a quarantinable communicable disease from
people who are not sick.
** Quarantine: the practice of separating and restricting movement of people who were exposed to a
contagious disease to see if they become sick.
(definitions from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
6) Faculty and staff members who decide to travel outside of Canada during any holiday period during the 2020/21 school year, will not be paid during any quarantine time that is required after the trip and falls during the school’s scheduled days of classes. Should an individual contract COVID-19 while travelling on such a trip and be unable to work, even after the quarantine period is over, the school will not pay the individual during such time, regardless of sick days in the contract.
7) All faculty, staff, volunteers or visitors will wear a mask and face shield at all times while on campus and in the presence of students, or other faculty, staff, volunteers or visitors. The only exceptions will be:
a. When a class is held outside, a mask will be the minimum expectation for the teacher or supervisor.
b. While in a communal office space and alone, a mask will be the minimum expectation.
c. Within an office space, faculty and staff should maintain proper social distancing of two (2) metres. Where this cannot be done, faculty and staff must continue to wear masks AND shields
8) Faculty and staff will not congregate in social groups that cannot maintain the appropriate two (2) metres of social distancing between individuals. This will potentially limit the number of faculty and staff that can eat lunch in the kitchen.
9) Faculty and staff will be required to wear business casual clothing (no tie or jacket and no denim).
10) Faculty or staff members who are using public transit as a means of getting to school will need to bring a change of clothes to change into once they have arrived at school.
11) Sanitization of hands will be required before entering and classroom or office within the school
12) Washing of hands with soap and warm water on a regular basis will be expected for community health.
Procedures:
1) The schools, as per normal, will ensure records of classes, including seating charts and daily records of any approved visitors to the school, including supply/occasional teachers or custodians are maintained and readily available to be provided to public health for contact tracing purposes.
2) Faculty, staff, volunteers and visitors will be required to screen themselves, via the EduSafe App, before coming to school. Should the EduSafe App not be available to certain individuals, they will self-assess before coming to Northmount and will be assessed upon arrival.
3) Faculty, staff, volunteers and visitors will be required to adhere to the above policies. PPE will be supplied by the school for faculty, staff and volunteers, and, if needed, it will be supplied for visitors. Requests for new PPE should be directed to Jeanne Withers.
4) Homeroom teachers will need to be in their Homerooms by 8:00 a.m. so as to supervise students who arrive early and will be directed immediately to their cohort space.
5) Faculty and staff, while interacting with students in the classroom, should do their best to maintain social distancing. At times where this is not possible, the proper wearing of PPE will provide protection against COVID-19.
6) Each classroom will be supplied with a spray bottle containing a medical grade cleaning solution. After each class and when necessary, teachers will ensure that each desk has been cleaned.
7) Teachers and supervisors will be responsible for demonstrating the proper donning and doffing of face masks for the students. When they are off, teachers will that they are in a safe space so as not to get soiled.
8) At end of day, teachers will only dismiss students when they have been asked to do so by a school administrator who is coordinating pick up at the front of campus.

(definitions from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
5) All Northmount students (JK-8) will be expected to wear a mask during classes that are held within the regular classroom environment.
6) Students will sanitize their hands before entering any classroom or office space.
Procedures:
1) Students will keep their knapsack on the back of their chairs and bins beneath their chairs while at school.
2) Each student will be responsible for his own supplies and will not lend them out to others.
3) Students will be allowed to remove their masks for classes that will be held outside and for all Phys. Ed. classes.
4) With a heightened focus on illness and proactive reaction to symptoms, increased absenteeism may be a reality for the coming school year. Please note that attendance, as always, will be monitored, but there will be no repercussions for numerous absences, given the present circumstances.
5) Students will have access to a locker but it will be used on a limited basis. Coats, Phys. Ed attire, and indoor running shoes should be the only items contained in them
6) Students who will be absent for a prolonged period of time, in coordination with the school, will be academically supported through the Edsby asynchronous platform. Students will be able to contact teachers through Edsby for further support and directions.
7) Recognizing that the mental health impact of this pandemic on our students is very real, each student will continue to have an Advisor with whom he will meet on a regular basis. Parents and the school will continue to work together to monitor and support the healthy development of our boys.
